Abstract

The National Solid Waste Plan (PNRS), published in 2010, was a milestone in the search for sustainable growth in Brazil. It highlights the necessity of shared responsibility, between government, private enterprise and society on solid waste management. Concepts of 3Rs (reduce, reuse and recycle), reverse logistics, Environmental Education and Economic Instruments (EI) are set as methods to achieve the goal of environmentally friendly management to the waste produced in Brazil. However, six years after the release of the PNRS, the expected results are disappointing and the numbers are far below that was proposed in 2010. This paper presents the data published by ABRELPE between 2010 and 2016 showing the poor performance of the PRNS.
