Abstract

There was a decline in rainwater harvesting from the mid-twentieth century due to the great enthusiasm for the construction of dams, greater use of groundwater and use of large water supply systems. However, rain water harvesting emerges now as a strong ally for conservation of water resources, especially in the current context characterized by a significant water scarcity. In this context, this study aimed to analyze the pros and cons of using rainwater harvesting systems. The methodology consisted of a literature review on the topic in scientific journals and components manufacturing companies for rainwater harvesting. At the end of this study was concluded that the rainwater harvesting system is a technique that should be encouraged, but there are problems regarding the quality of stored water, especially problems with contamination of biological origin.
